The promise of hearing Zeppelin II was a deal-maker as well, the kind of rock and roll Rose Hill Drive does best. But when the band opened up with Trans Am, an original track off the band’s latest, Moon is the New Earth, the crowd didn’t know what to think. As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Good thing too, because onc

Chicago’s favorite export is coming to Colorado, and I’m not talking about either crooked politicians or Da Bears. I’m talking about Umphrey’s McGee, who will be doing a four-night stint along the Front Range later this month, beginning at the Aggie in Fort Collins on the 22nd. From there, UM will be stopping at the Boulder Theater on the 23rd, with back to back gigs in Denver at the Fillmore and Cervantes on the 24th, and a show in Breckenridge on the 25th.

Rightmire’s harmonica is almost certainly the band’s most exciting feature. It functions like a mouth-operated synthesizer, electrified, and run through a huge board of pedals. At times it sounds like a DJ scratch kit, at others it sounds like something from outer space. Sometimes it sounds like a regular harmonica. Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps

Star drummer Gene Krupa and his Orchestra were the hottest of the hot stuff in the big band years. Fortunately Mike Berkowitz, an incredible drummer of today rescued the brilliant Krupa arrangements and put together a phenomenal aggregation of some of our New York Jazz world's swingingest musicians and Vocalist extraordinaire, Cassie Miller from L.A. Marco Granados and Un Mundo Ensemble perform music from their homeland, Venezuela. Venezuelan music is characterized by fast melodies, complex syncopated rhythms, and jazzy harmonies that blend the traditions of African, European and native cultures with sense of sophistication that is truly unique. A lot of Un Mundo’s arrangements are virtuosic, giving the performers the opportunity to display mastery of their instruments. The different styles performed by the ensemble represent the typical for

Hard blowing, finger-snapping, klezmer-inflected jazz and wailing big city blues that suddenly slips into Yiddish; Shapiro tips his beret to Slim Gaillard with a couple of his tunes in praise of kosher cuisine, pours soul sauce and reggae beats over Jewish comedy songs and generally rips into things with just the right mix of irreverence and affection... Respect is due to John Zorn's Tzadik label for bringing this unique recording to the world. There really is no one else doing it quite like Sha

Michael Formanek may have one of the most diverse biographies in contemporary improvised music. At first glance his list of musical affiliations is both intriguing and confusing. Spanning nearly twenty three years he has played and/or recorded with Tim Berne, Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Marty Ehrlich, Chet Baker, Tony Williams, Gerry Mulligan, Kevin Mahogany, Fred Hersch, Marimolin, Dave Liebman, Uri Caine, Joe Henderson, Mark Isham, James Emery, Bob Mintzer, Mingus Dynasty, Mingus Big Band, Ter

When Marcus was growing up, every night after dinner his mother would call him over to the piano to teach him a new song. She had no great plan to train him professionally, she only wanted him to know this music and have it a part of his life. She would always say, “This is a great one for you to know.”

The album opens with the trance-inducing polyrhythm’s and gorgeous multi-layered vocals of "Only Pieces.” What follows is an album oozing with sounds maternal and subconscious...like floating in amniotic fluid, ripe, hiccup-y and desperate to emerge. Many of the songs pulse with infectious afro-beat and kraut-rock influenced grooves, calling to mind classic albums like Remain in Light and Graceland. In contrast, the instrumental tracks conjure mystical introspective landscapes reminiscent of P

In total, Fujiya & Miyagi don’t really sound like anything. Instead, they sound like everything condensed into perfectly arranged three minute chunks of infectious pop music, a strange hybrid of James Brown on Valium and Wire gone pop. Or maybe Serge Gainsbourg with a PhD in electronics backed by David Byrne’s Eno-produced scratchy guitar mixed by MF Doom. Its Darwinism gone mad.

After a little while, the Wood Brothers take the stage. Chris Wood, the “Wood” in Medeski Martin and Wood, picks up his standup bass, and his older brother Oliver grabs a guitar. Mostly, Oliver sings, putting his gritty voice up against his guitar picking. Chris Wood sings too, writes a few of the songs, and puts in the rhythm. Chris brings the jazz; Oliver brings the blues. Like Joe Pug, Oliver Wood is a storyteller, introspective and lyrical. The combination of all these elements is soul

The New Orleans-rooted group is a living synthesis of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R & B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness – not to mention exceedingly sharp musicianship and ensemble playing. It’s tight enough to be loose, but never sloppy.

Living in Colorado, the chance of an epic snowfall during the winter can be pretty good. One such weather occurrence happened in late 2006 when three straight weekends of blizzards hit Denver and the surrounding Front Range. The city essentially shut down those days, and holiday travels were next to impossible. In the midst of those storms a highly anticipated two-night run of the Stephen Perkins-led project Banyan was cancelled. As fate might have it, out of the darkness came light as a new

The holiday weekend gave most us a chance to enjoy some needed time off from our daily grinds, as well as fill our homes with friends and tons of the usual Thanksgiving feasts. And what better way to work off the turkey and tators than by dancing to the reggae, rock, and hip-hop sounds laid down by Michael Franti and Spearhead, who brought the noise this last Friday to Denver's Fillmore Auditorium as part of the annual Harvest Ball.

Formed in Wisconsin, three years ago, Enchanted Ape began with the dream of guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter Chris O'Brien and three percussionists. Unlike the raw, folk music I heard during Nathan Moore’s thought provoking solo sets on a recent short tour of the Northeast, his latest release, ‘You Yeah Smokin’ Hot’, takes advantage of what the studio has to offer today’s musician. With a full band, backup vocals, overdubs, sound effects and the occasional spoken recording, ‘You Yeah Smokin’ Hot’ is a stark contrast to what you may have seen lately from this poet. But what it does share with Nathan’s live performance and his folk roots is th

Nearly every performer out there is touting some sort of Christmas or holiday album. Among those that came across my desk was a little gem called The Jewish Songbook: The Heart and Humor of a People (2008). It's a CD compilation from Shout Factory and the Jewish Music Group put together by record producer, recording engineer, playwright, singer, and screenwriter, Brooks Arthur. If there had been any pretentious doubt or ego defining my relationship with the music of Dark Star Orchestra, it faded away on my drive home that evening. As I listened to a recording of The Grateful Dead laid down in 1976, I found my mind wandering to how these new stewards of this music- this gift- would interpret this same set list. But my mind wandered further to realize that, as wardens of the music of The Grateful Dead, it is their right, more than anyone, save its originators, to determi

But at the World Café Live, near the Ivy League campus of the University of Pennsylvania, there was beautiful music happening with or without the crowds. Pianist and composer Elmo Hope was on the scene from the mid 1950s into the 1960s. This year, June 27, 2008, would have been Elmo's 85th birthday. Elmo was very close to two forward-thinking musical giants, in fact, he spent so much time with Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell that they were called "The 3 Musketeers." Monk loved Elmo's composing and referred to him as his favorite contemporary composer.

The music that inspired The Walkmen to compose You and Me follows in a tradition of song writing that goes back to early rock 'n' roll: the intimacy and energy of Elvis Presley's and Buddy Holly's early recordings, and the massive voice and orchestration of Roy Orbison. And it carries on through people like Bob Marley and Randy Newman and on to bands like The Pogues and The Modern Lovers - the sort of songs that are very much a product of their time and place while firmly rooted in tradition.

Branches on the tree of music will never stop growing. As soon as someone pioneers a new sound, five others have radiated from it, creating what they see as their own unique niche, slightly different form their predecessors. Unfortunately, such constant divergence creates an intricate web of music where nothing is original and no two sounds can be grouped exclusively under one heading. This has lead to bands describing themselves with more stylistic differences than those listed at a record stor

Herbie Nichols is a perennially neglected jazz pianist and composer. He recorded less than half of his 170 compositions on three classic trio albums for Blue Note and one for Bethlehem before dying of leukemia at the age of 43 in 1963. He is often compared to Thelonious Monk, and his piano playing and compositions certainly do have some of the harmonic angularity people associate with Monk. But he had a very distinctive sound of his own, more melancholy and, for lack of a better word, poetic tha
